Great article. One of the things Milwaukee isn't very good at is controlling the narrative about Milwaukee. We don't stand for anything and have little brand identity to speak of. It's a real tragedy given how great we know this city to be. Those huge sporting events don't "put us on the map" because they happen every year in cities across the country. They don't differentiate. Same is true of negative stories -- they happen everywhere. We simply need to answer the question "what ONLY happens here" and we will be on the road to discovering our true nature as a city. Nashville is Music City. LA is The City of Angels. NYC is the Big Apple. Chicago is The Windy City. What's Milwaukee? What is the first thing comes to mind when you hear the name? Beer? Brats? Ron Johnson? Racism? It's something we need to work on.
What put Wisconsin on the map? I'd have thought the short ride from progressivism to wingnut has given us a worldwide reputation.
