Heartland Signal: 'Republicans are removing many popular policies from Gov. Tony Evers’ proposed budget'
Plus: Dan Shafer is guest hosting WTMJ Nights tonight (!) on 620 WTMJ.
The Recombobulation Area is a
six-time TEN-TIME Milwaukee Press Club award-winning weekly opinion column and online publication written and published by veteran Milwaukee journalist Dan Shafer. Learn more about it here.
This week, Wisconsin Republicans voted to remove more than 540 items from Gov. Evers’ proposed budget. They’ve now done this for each of the three budgets the governor has proposed. Evers’ victory last fall didn’t change this process one bit, and GOP leaders once again kicked bipartisanship to the curb.
They are also removing policies that have overwhelming and often bipartisan support. Things like Medicaid expansion, paid leave, marijuana legalization and lead pipe replacement all have the support of well over 60% of Wisconsin voters (and sometimes close to three-quarters of Wisconsin voters), according to the Marquette University Law School Poll, but Republican leadership continues to refuse to meet in the middle.
So, let’s recombobulate.
This column was published in partnership with Heartland Signal.
The Recombobulation Area is partnering with Heartland Signal and WCPT 820AM, progressive radio based in Chicago. Tonight on 620 WTMJ, I will be once again guest hosting WTMJ Nights!
I’ll be talking about headlines from an extraordinarily busy news day in Wisconsin (changes to the state budget! veto threats! shared revenue dealing! more!), and will be joined by guests to talk about child care funding in the state budget and about the future of the Stadium Freeway, with the first public involvement meeting for that project coming up next week (learn more about that here).
Tune in on your local radio dial or listen live online here.
Listen to my past appearance hosting the show here.
In case you’re not sick of me talking after all that, I was also on the air as a guest on a couple other radio shows this week through our friends at Civic Media.
On Monday, I joined As Goes Wisconsin to talk about shared revenue. Listen to that appearance as a podcast here.
And one of our other weekly scheduled radio segments is to join Luke Mathers on Dueling Tangents on the Civic Media network every Tuesday during the 2 p.m. hour. Listen to that appearance as a podcast here.
