Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and state state Republicans threw a curveball this week, proposing a bill to adopt a redistricting process based on the “Iowa model.”
Iowa’s nonpartisan redistricting process is one that has received praise from fair maps advocates, but this proposal was met with a whole lot of resistance. As we covered yesterday, the Wisconsin bill differs from the “Iowa model” in a number of key ways. Read that column here:
But we still wanted to learn more about the Iowa model and what it might mean for Wisconsin. So we were joined by Andy Suchorski, a Wisconsin political consultant and the former executive director of Iowa Senate Democrats, who saw the Iowa redistricting process up close in 2021. As part of our conversation, we tget into the weeds on what’s good and what’s not-so-good about the “Iowa model,” and discuss some of the key differences between what happens in Iowa and what’s being proposed for Wisconsin.
