The Recombobulation Area is a ten-time Milwaukee Press Club award-winning weekly opinion column and online publication written, edited and published by longtime Milwaukee journalist Dan Shafer. Learn more about it here.
Greetings, folks.
It’s been a busy few weeks for us at The Recombobulation Area, and now that we have a moment to catch our breath, I wanted to update you on a bit of what we’ve been up to, in case you missed it.
But first, a recommendation for you wonderful newsletter subscribers. Our friends over at Milwaukee Record, who we partner with regularly (including on a recent story on the WNBA in Milwaukee!), have launched a new weekly newsletter.
So, subscribe to the Milwaukee Record newsletter here. It’s free!
Here’s that link to subscribe, one more time.
Speaking of Milwaukee Record, they are among the sponsors for the upcoming Brady Street Pet Parade! The event will even feature a Costume Contest, emceed by Milwaukee Record’s Matt Wild. And yours truly will be one of the judges! We’ll be there with our own The Recombobulation Area booth, so be sure to stop by and say hi! We’ll have some subscription specials and more on site.
This event takes place on Sunday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Find all the details on the event here, and if you want to enter your pet in the contest, get those tickets here.
As regular followers of our social media are likely already aware, I have been doing a whole lot more radio and podcasts in and around town lately. I now have four regular weekly radio spots, where you can get even more recombobulation.
To update you on that schedule, it is…
Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.: WTMJ N.O.W. with Steve Scaffidi and Sandy Maxx on 620 WTMJ
Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.: As Goes Wisconsin with Kristin Brey (and Jane Matanaer) on Civic Media
Tuesday, 5:15 p.m.: Driving it Home with Patti Vasquez on WCPT 820 / Heartland Signal
Wednesday, 12:30 p.m.: Town Call with Luke Mathers and Wil Walter on Civic Media
All of those shows are available on your favorite podcast apps, and are archived on each of the show pages linked above.
Here’s some of what you might have missed last week.
PLUS: Coming up soon, I will be guest hosting Town Call while Luke is away on vacation. Catch me on the air with Wil Walter from Oct. 2 - 5!
Also this past week, I made my first appearance on The Bart Winkler Show to talk about Brewers stadium funding and the path forward to keeping the Brewers in Milwaukee.
You can watch that show on YouTube here…
…or stream it on your favorite podcast app.
ALSO: I recently joined Edwin Eisendrath on “The Big Picture” on WCPT 820 / Heartland Signal to talk about Wisconsin Republicans’ threats to impeach Janet Protasiewicz. Listen to that show as a podcast here, or find the show page here.
You can also subscribe to
from Edwin Eisendrath here.ALSO: You may have noticed a small change around here. We have a new URL!
It is…
www.therecombobulationarea.news
You can still find us at recombobulationarea.substack.com, too. But this new URL is going to make it easier for us to share links to our work, especially on the website formerly known as Twitter, which is still limiting the reach of any link from Substack.
Speaking of which, you can also find me on Threads and Bluesky. We’re also doing more on Instagram lately, and you can find us there at @therecombobulationarea.
ALSO: We recently started up our referral deal, where you can invite people you know to subscribe to The Recombobulation Area.
It’s pretty simple. You can save money on your subscription by referring others to subscribe. Three referrals = one free month ($5 value), five referrals = three free months ($15 value), and 25 referrals = six free months ($25 value). It’s pretty good!
Use this link…
… and let's keep recombobulating.
More details here.
Last thing: We published two pieces this week on child care, as Republicans gaveled-in and took no action on the governor’s special session.
Here is my column…
…and here is one from Corrine Hendrickson, co-founder of WECAN and the owner and operator of owner and operator of Corrine’s Little Explorers Family Child Care in New Glarus, Wis.
Both of these are available for free.
We can make in-depth opinion and analysis and guest columns like this available for free because of your support. Subscribe to The Recombobulation Area and we can continue to grow local, independent media covering news and politics in Milwaukee and Wisconsin.
Thanks to all of you who subscribe and make this publication possible!
