Milwaukee Record: 'Looming Gannett layoffs highlight importance of local news, Wisconsin’s precarious position'
"Nothing will ever compare to the coverage that comes with being part of a community and showing up, over and over, to cover the issues it is facing."
The Recombobulation Area is a six-time Milwaukee Press Club award-winning weekly opinion column and online publication written and published by veteran Milwaukee journalist Dan Shafer. Learn more about it here.
Wisconsin’s media landscape is overly beholden to corporate chain ownership of local newspapers. Recent news that Gannett — which owns 11 newspapers in the state — would be laying off employees is discouraging.
The ever-present threat of cuts to already-understaffed publications is particularly problematic in a state like Wisconsin, and it’s more important now than ever to subscribe to your local newspaper.
